Domain Registrar Reviews

There are a ton of companies out there claiming to offer domain registration services. However, don’t assume that all domain registrars are the same. Many registrars are either highly overpriced, or provide poor quality and unreliable service…or both! Don’t register another domain name until you’ve read through our reviews of these popular domain registration companies.

GoDaddy (4/5)

GoDaddy is one of the most popular registrars, partly from their somewhat controversial advertising, and also from their overall reliable service. As far as their service is concerned, GoDaddy is actually quite a good, reliable domain registration company. However, there are a few issues with GoDaddy that you’ll want to be aware of.

  1. First, while their prices are somewhat competitive, there are definitely other companies that offer comparable quality service for a better value. Continue reading to learn what some of them are.
  2. Second, if you’re looking for private registration (masked WHOIS information), GoDaddy’s prices increase to have this feature. If you’re planning on doing private WHOIS on your domain, you should definitely consider some cheaper alternatives to GoDaddy that include private registration at no additional charge.

NetFirms (5/5)

NetFirms is actually our most highly recommended domain registration company, so if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to GoDaddy, you might not need to look any further. In our experience, NetFirms provides comparable quality service to GoDaddy, but is a couple dollars cheaper and includes a domain security feature (private WHOIS) already within that price.

1&1 Internet (1/5)

Now that we’ve discussed our favorite domain registrar, here’s our least favorite. Everything about 1&1, from the terrible quality of their service, to their embarrassing lack of tech support, is absolutely atrocious. We were shocked at how they could even be in business after the horrible nightmares we experienced with this awful company.

  1. First, registration and settings changes take ridiculously long to complete. For example, nameserver changes sometimes take over 24 hours just to process on 1&1′s system (not internet propagation time).
  2. Second, 1&1 makes it extremely difficult to cancel their services, including domain registrations. So to warn you, if you decided that you did not want to renew a domain name for the following year, 1&1 would not make it easy for you. You might appreciate these 1&1 Internet horror stories.

    Yahoo! Domains (3/5)

Based on service quality alone, Yahoo is a perfectly reliable domain registrar. The company utilizes the services of Melbourne IT, an Australia-based company, to provide domain registration. Melbourne IT offers great service, and consequently, Yahoo domain registration service is fine. As you might have guessed, however, there are a few issues we have with Yahoo! as a domain registrar.

    • First, their pricing can be a bit misleading. Yahoo! seems to offer great deals to first-time registrations but then raise their prices substantially following that first term.
    • Second, the way that Yahoo! handles email accounts and other features on domain names seems to require additional services (and additional fees, of course). Further, Yahoo charges additional fees for private registration (masked WHOIS).
